Hi, my names Reina and Im a TakeLessons teacher. I offer a customized, holistic approach to learning the voice during my one-on-one sessions. In addition, I have the privilege of teaching some pretty awesome group classes online  using TakeLessons Live. Online teaching is still relatively new and I get questions every day about how it works. Id like to run through a few of the more common questions I get, and show you what to expect when you sign up for a class. So lets get started with the number one question What are the pros and cons to online classes versus in-person? The pros are that theres a lot of personal space, so sometimes if youre a new singer, it  can be kind of intimidating to sing in front of your teachers. Having that technological barrier can be super helpful, just making it more comfortable. Secondly, youre more likely to show up because you can be in your jammies, it could be raining outside, and all you have to do is turn on your device. And lastly, you can take lessons anywhere; as long as you have an internet connection and an up-to-date device, you’re good to go. The cons would be that the teacher can’t give you a hug at the end of class and tell you what a good job you did. You can get an online high five, but it’s not the same. Sometimes there can be technical difficulties so its really important to test your internet strength and to use the most up-to-date device that you have. What are the pros and cons to group classes versus private? The pros are that youre not alone. It’s really nice to know that other people can be on this journey with you, and its way cheaper [than private lessons]. The cons are that the classes are not customized, so if you’re a level thats higher or lower than the class is designed for, you may find yourself either wandering off because you get a little bit bored, or you could get frustrated because it’s just a lot of information at one time. Secondly, you cant cover as much information just because it is geared towards the general populace of the class and it’s not one-on-one. What types of students attend online classes? All types! I get young students, old students, beginner students, advanced students, hobby singers, and professionals. The classes are all-inclusive, they’re open to anyone that wants to learn, and every class is different. What types of students excel in online group classes? This answer is really easy: it’s the type of student that practices. Group classes, and all music lessons for that matter, are  intended to help you practice on your own. You’re not going to get good in one hour, a week,   or two 30-minute lessons a week. The type of student that excels in group classes is the type of student that can take notes, asks questions, and practices the information and techniques that they’ve learned. What will I learn by taking online group classes? Each group class has a different focus. Some of the classes are geared towards beginners and they might focus on basic techniques. Other classes might be more intermediate or advanced, and they’re going to focus on more difficult techniques. So be sure to read the descriptions for each class that’s offered and dont be afraid to ask questions. Can I actually get better by taking online group classes? Yes, absolutely! I have noticed no difference in growth or technique retention between my online students versus my in-studio students. If you continue to show up and you practice, youre going to see growth; easy as that! Do I need to have anything prepared? Most of the time, youre not going to need anything beyond a pen and paper for taking notes, and a bottle of water to keep you hydrated, but be sure to read the descriptions carefully. There are a few classes that may have special requirements. Will I need to sing in front of the class? Well, this depends. The teacher is never going to force you to sing if youre not comfortable, but there are classes, like the audition prep class, where its just not going to be as helpful to you if the teacher cant hear where youre at and what youre doing as youre singing your song. Some of the more intro classes are more information-based and singing live isn’t even a part of the class. If you have a specific question or concern you can always log onto the class early and speak with the teacher in the  little chat box, and just let them know a little bit about yourself. If I could offer one piece of advice what would it be? This is the easiest question by far and the answer is its that you can sing. Dont ever let anybody tell you otherwise, not even yourself! The voice instrument takes practice and patience, just like any other instrument, and if you apply yourself and work diligently, you can master your voice. Group classes are a great way to learn. Luckily, many introverts have the ability to “actively listen” by asking others questions about themselves. The more you can use this skill, the more you can show how much you care about your colleagues. You also get to know them better which improves the chances that those who are a part of the decision-making process are on your side. Remember that it’s not weird   Your boss knows that it’s part of his or her job to deal with employees asking for a raise or promotion. He majored in Theater, Economics, and Government when he attended Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York and graduated in 2011. See what Brandon had to say about his alma mater: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Brandon: Saratoga Springs is probably one of the most beautiful cities in the northeast; it is mostly a summer vacation town, so it doesn't feel like a college town, but there are plenty of options (food, clothing, etc.) for college students. The economy during the summer months drums up enough business for Saratoga to host some of the most amazing restaurants in the northeast, apparently keeping the record for the largest concentration of bars and restaurants in the continental United States (maybe hearsay? Either way, the town feels like that is true). Getting downtown is as easy as taking a free bus from campus, I think they still run every 30 minutes. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Brandon: My professors were almost always available to speak with and I became close with a few of them. Whether a professor is in his or her office all day or not, every professor has mandated office hours during the week. If these conflict with you, most are usually helpful and willing to accommodate. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Brandon: The dining hall is amazing. Friends of mine from home who came to visit said it was the best thing they've ever experienced, especially at a college. Dorm and housing life is always getting better; a new housing establishment has just been finished and the other options are centrally located and easy to get to. I took the off-campus housing option my junior and senior years, just because I love the city of Saratoga and wanted to be more connected with it. Actually, living downtown is different from living on campus; Skidmore is like it's own little community, and so is Saratoga. I just wanted to get a little more connected with the Saratoga community. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Brandon: Well, it's hard to say which program or major Skidmore sees at it's most important. Sure, there are an abundance of students majoring in Business, Studio Art and Foreign Languages, but there is room for other kinds of majors. I majored in Theater and felt very well taken care of. My junior year, I mounted a production of Jean-Paul Sartre's No Exit at the historic Caffe Lena in downtown Saratoga Springs and Skidmore gave me a grant to pay for the space and the rights for the play. The Theater department was a tight-knit group and we took care of each other. On the other hand, my housemate senior year majored in Physics and went on to graduate school at University of Washington, studying Aerospace Engineering; so, whatever you study, you will probably be accommodated. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Brandon: I found it really easy to meet people and make friends my freshman year. I was really stressed out about making friends and doing well before I went, but once you arrive you realize that most people are in the same boat; everyone is essentially friendless, so if you put yourself out there, people will respond. Greek life doesn't exist at Skidmore, but we have A'Capella groups, and they come close. I was in one, so it seems that way. People who weren't in A'Capella groups probably didn't care too much though. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Brandon: The Business department at Skidmore is reputable and one of the most active on campus. Ben and Jerry's Phish Food ice cream flavor came from an idea that a group in the Business department's 101 class came up with. Most of my friends received a lot of help from the Career Center and were successful in finding jobs upon graduation. It was different for me; I entered the professional theater world after I graduated, so there was not much Skidmore could have done for me other than train me and give me connections with people after graduation, both of which I received. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Brandon: I mostly studied in the library or in my room (aside from majoring in theater, I minored in government and studied economics Skidmore's Liberal Arts tradition took a hold of me). The library was great and spacious, while I was there at least. Recently, I've heard murmurs of over-crowded-ness around campus, but that may not be true. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Brandon: Saratoga is the best city in the north-east. Every time I go back to that place I have a perpetual smile on my face. Some of the best food I've ever tasted comes from Saratoga. It's so quaint, yet so cultured; there are art galleries, performing spaces, shops with oddities, and plenty of delicious food. While there, try The Local, Ravenous, or Putnam Market. There are so many other places, try it all! I lived downtown my senior year, some of my friends did the same thing. I'd say by senior year about half of the class is living downtown, while the other half stays with the on-campus Northwoods housing option, which is just as awesome. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Brandon: I don't think I had a single class size over 30, and most of them hovered around 10 or 15. I was generally amazed by class sizes. I had an acting class my junior year that was 5 students; this was amazing. I got so much up close and personal work with one of the best acting teachers around, a permanent member of the SITI company and excellent actor in his own right. ADHD can make it hard to stay organized, and messy backpacks often lead to lost homework, missing or crumpled permission slips, and heavy loads that weigh kids down. Try these tips to help your child clean out their backpack and keep it neat all year long. Make a list. Together with your child make a list of things that should be in the backpack. Be very specific. For example, if your child likes to keep library books in their backpack, allow them to carry only one book (two at most) at a time. Have a homework folder. Select one specific folder that is used to bring homework sheets to and from school. Use the left side of the folder for unfinished work, and the right side for completed worksheets. Check the homework folder every day to make sure the completed side is empty when your child comes home. Kids with ADHD often forget to turn in completed work! Have a second folder for notes to parents and other papers. Keep permission slips, notes for parents, and papers that dont belong in the homework folder in a second folder. This keeps the backpack from getting cluttered with loose paper. Use a pencil pouch. Keep pencils, pens, and erasers in a pouch. Theyll be easy to find and will be less likely to be lost or broken. Set limits on toys in the backpack. Kids often want to keep non-school related items, like figurines, stuffed animals, or trading cards, in their backpacks. Usually theyll get into trouble with teachers when they pull these things out in class. So, its best to keep them at home. If your child insists on bringing toys to school, set limits. Allow only one item at a time. Do a backpack check every day. To keep the backpack in tiptop shape, youll need to do a quick backpack check every day. Give your child lots of praise when theyve used their checklist and organization plan! If they are backsliding, catch it early. Try not to criticize. Just let them know what is out of place and how to fix it. Clean out the backpack every week. Pick a time once a week when your child will go through the backpack checklist and do a cleanout. Check the backpack once the cleanout is complete, and help them along the way if they need it. Praise their effort! If they meet their checklist goal, consider providing a small reward. Just as you’re getting comfortable, the world and its karma throw you into a completely new environment called college. That’s right. You’re a confused freshman once again. All of a sudden you have no clue. “What’s going on, where to go, how to make friends, and where in the world are my classes?!” Not to mention the lack of parental control and the copious amount of “free” time. It can be overwhelming, to say the least. I’m here to tell you that there is a helpful tactic in deciphering it all. TIME MANAGEMENT. Here are a few tips to make sure you make the most of your time in college, without flunking out. SET GOALS…and WRITE THEM DOWN. We all know the fantastic feeling we can get out of crossing something off the To-Do list. But the existence of such a list isn’t just a boost of confidence, it keeps us organized. Otherwise, you may find yourself spending all of your time wondering how to get everything done instead of doing. Setting reachable, daily goals for yourself will allow you to organize the chaotic world of college and your time in a way that aidsprogress and achievement. We all love to cross those goals off the To-Do list, so make it a priority to create a new list for the next day each night before you go to bed. Just think of how many tasks you’ll get to accomplish! Now that’s something to look forward to. GET A PLANNER…and USE IT. Now that you’ve decided to set goals and make daily To-Do lists, where are you going to write it all down? In a planner! Especially when dealing with a new class schedule, club meetings, and activities that aren’t programmed into your brain yet, it is immensely helpful to have one place that displays every obligation you have. This way, you can keep track of plans and work around them. Without a planner, you WILL forget things. College is stressful enough; don’t let yourself make it any harder. BLOCK AND BALANCE YOUR COURSES. When building your schedule for the next semester of college, it’s important to note that blocking courses back to back instead of spreading them out over the course of a week is the most effective use of your time. As a freshman, you may not like this idea; one or two classes a day sounds pretty awesome. But in reality, you will spend those awkward amounts of time between classes on Facebook or eating a long lunch. If you can schedule classes back to back on two or three days in a week, you will find that you have larger chunks of time better suited to studying. Also, make sure you’re balancing courses and not spending too much time focusing on one and neglecting others. It is important to know where your strengths and weaknesses lie in each subject area and to plan your time accordingly. A good rule of thumb is for every 1 hour of class, commit to two hours of study time. Although this may seem excessive, if you follow this guideline, things like midterms and finals will be much easier to conquer. OWL? OR ROOSTER? It’s important to be honest with yourself when determining your best times to study and focus. Some of us are night owls while others are more productive in the morning hours. Although many times we’d like to think we could wake up at 7am and finish all the homework we didn’t do the night before, that’s not a good idea if you just aren’t a morning person. Just because your new roommate studies at 4pm doesn’t mean that will work best for you too. Listen to your body’s natural biological clock! It’s important to be honest with yourself and schedule study time appropriately. GET HELP BEFORE YOU REALLY NEED IT Most teaching assistants have office hours all semester. They are free to attend, and you can ask questions in a quiet, 1-1 environment. As the year progresses, you could probably go every week, perhaps more than that, and get free, private tutoring from your professor â€" because almost nobody seems to take advantage of these office hours until right before a big test, midterm, project, or final. Similarly, many colleges offer free private or small group tutoring at places that have names like “Academic Resource Center,” etc. The same story goes for these resources as well. Don’t be afraid to use these services. The earlier, more proactively you use them, the quicker you’ll understand the material, and the less time you’ll need to spend rushing around before a big test. Time invested now will save time later, and you’ll almost always end up with a better grade in the class. If you are a college freshman feeling overwhelmed, let me tell you a little secret: you’re not the only one.
